Calloway County’s Southwest Elementary is one of only 10 schools in Kentucky to be named a Blue Ribbon School this week by the U.S. Department of Education.

The Calloway County School Board is considering outsourcing custodians to reduce spending and increase efficiency. Graves County Schools Head Custodian Matthew Powell is leading an effort against the possible effort. He says the county could save $130,000 a year by outsourcing but that they will regret it.

  A Calloway County Middle School student has been charged with terroristic threatening after a bomb threat was called in at the school earlier this week.


The Murray Independent and Calloway County school districts will begin taking bids later this month on a new career and technical center that will be jointly owned by both districts.

McLean County Schools Superintendent Tres Settle is leaving the district to assume the same post in Calloway County. Settle has been with McLean County since 2008 and is a member of the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents.


Settle is a Calhoun, Kentucky native with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky and a Master's and Rank 1 in Educational Administration at Western Kentucky University. He later added a superintendent endorsement from Murray State University.   


A group of local students have qualified for an international academic tournament this summer.

Last week, the Calloway County Middle School Future Problem Solving Team, a division of the Academic Team, placed third at the Kentucky Association for Academic Competition state tournament in Louisville.

The placement allowed the Calloway FPS students an invitation to advance on to the Future Problem Solving Championship in Ames, Iowa which will feature thousands of students from across the United States and from all over the globe.  


A Calloway County High School student was sent to the hospital this morning after opening, then falling out of, the rear emergency door of a moving school bus.

Authorities say the driver of a Calloway County school bus has been treated for injuries sustained in a single-vehicle accident early this morning.  

Forty-nine-year-old Terrie Swift of Murray was preparing to start her route when a deer ran in front of the southbound bus on Radio Road at about 6:50 a.m.

Today on NPR: When complete, Interstate 69 will provide a direct route from Mexico to Canada through the Midwest. Indiana must build miles of road to complete its leg of the project, but funding for the necessary construction is dwindling.
