Update:

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said in a release on Friday that the Ohio River “Cairo” Bridge will close at 6 p.m. as floodwaters approach the levee.

They said the bridge is expected to be closed for a week but could be extended if the flood crest is revised upward.

The US 51 Ohio River “Cairo” Bridge will have a daytime lane and 10-foot load width restriction starting Wednesday.

A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has asked to delay the start of repairs on the U.S. 51 Ohio River Bridge between Wickliffe, Ky. and Cairo, Ill. until after July 7.

During the repairs, the bridge will have a 7-foot maximum load width, which means an 80-mile detour for commercial drivers.

In a press release, KYTC spokesman Keith Todd said the agency wants truckers and suppliers who depend on the 76-year-old river crossing to be fully prepared for the coming project, which will last about two months.

The first of two public meetings concerning the future of the U.S. 51 Ohio River Bridge is tonight from 4-7 at Cairo High School.

Kentucky and Illinois highway officials are working with the Federal Highway Administration to gather public input on the nearly 80-year-old  structure. The bridge could be repaired or replaced.
