October Jobless Numbers Out for W. Ky.

Caldwell and Webster counties tied for the lowest October unemployment rate in western Kentucky. Webster’s rate dropped from 7.5 percent in September to 6.6 percent in October, while Caldwell County’s rate stayed flat.

Small Businesses Key to Job Creation in Delta Region

New data shows small businesses have led the Mississippi Delta region in job creation. The Delta Regional Authority released private-sector data Monday showing 90 percent of all new jobs in the area over the last 20 years have come from businesses with nine or fewer employees.

Convention Center Board of Directors Reaches Settlement with Local Businesses

The Paducah-McCracken County Convention Center Corporation Board agreed to a $180,000 settlement from a local accounting firm and CPA connected to an embezzlement lawsuit. Former CCC executive director J. Patrick Kerr and his accomplice Susan Wilson pled guilty in March to embezzling more than $200,000.

NRC Holds Public Meeting on Honeywell Upgrades

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission holds a public meeting next week in Metropolis to talk about safety upgrades at the local Honeywell nuclear fuel refinery. The plant shut down in May because NRC inspectors found the equipment could not withstand a major earthquake or tornado.

Fiscal Court to Consider Loan Program

The Henderson Fiscal Court will consider funding two business projects through a new county loan program at its Tuesday meeting.  The Henderson County Rural Communities Revolving Loan Fund was authorized in August to allow would-be businesses to borrow up to 10 thousand dollars at no interest over a 10-year period.

Three Jones-Owned Companies File for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy

Three more companies owned by Murray businessman Chuck Jones have entered into bankruptcy proceeding.

Jones’ joint venture with business partner David Griffin, Blackrock Investments, LLC, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy Monday in Nashville. On Oct. 27, Integrated Computer Solutions and Southeastern Book Company, also filed for Chapter 7, in Paducah Bankruptcy Court. Chapter 7  means that the companies will liquidate and eliminate most unsecured debts.

Hostess bankruptcy will close Mayfield depot

The closing of the major baked goods provider Hostess is leaving employees in our region out of work. The Irving, Texas based company and maker of twinkies and wonder bread is closing plants, laying off more than 18,000 workers and putting its brands up for sale.

College Book Renter Reduces Size as Part of Chapter 11 Reorganization

Murray-based College Book Renter is downsizing as part of its Chapter 11 Bankruptcy reorganization. College Book Renter is one of many companies owned by Murray businessman Chuck Jones and partner David Griffin, an Arkansas-based businessman.

Bankruptcy Trustee Robert Waldschmidt says CBR has set up a temporary smaller location, after abandoning its much larger facility south of town. Waldschmidt says that building was too big and too expensive to operate.

Tax Amnesty Deadline Approaching

The deadline is nearing for delinquent Kentucky taxpayers to take advantage of an amnesty period. Kentucky officials say this is the first amnesty period in 10 years and allows people to pay taxes that are due without paying fees or penalties and having the interest reduced by half.

Western Kentucky Counties Moving Toward Work Ready Status
