Murray Small Engine Plant Celebrates 70 Million Engines

The Briggs & Stratton plant in Murray has produced 70 million small engines since it opened in 1985; an average of nearly 2.6 million engines a year. At a press conference today Engine Products Group President Joseph Wright said the demand for quality engines allows them to keep that production domestic.

iwis Announces Plant and 75 Jobs for Murray

Gov. Steve Beshear announces iwis' $12.5 million investment in a Murray plant.

A German automotive parts company plans to open its first United States plant in Murray. iwis is hiring 75 employees for its plant that will make engine timing drives.

The company takes over a nearly 119-thousand square foot facility north of town. The building was held by another auto parts manufacturer, Webasto, that shut down in 2008.

Power Plant Project Good for W. Ky. Coal Industry.

State leaders say a nearly $1 billion project to update pollution controls at a massive Louisville power plant will be a boost for Kentucky's coal industry.

The upgrades at LG&E's Mill Creek Generating Station in southwestern Jefferson County are expected to add about 700 construction jobs. They will also allow the 1,400-megawatt plant to continue to burn coal by meeting stricter federal air regulations that go in force in 2016.

Patriot Coal Case Moved to St. Louis

Patriot Coal’s federal bankruptcy case will no longer be heard in New York City. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Shelley Chapman in New York ruled that the case be moved to St. Louis, where Patriot Coal is based. Chapman says there were hundreds of handwritten letters from retired coal miners.

Peabody to Close IL Mine

A Peabody Energy Corp.  subsidiary is permanently closing a southern Illinois mine because it failed to meet safety, compliance and performance standards. Bay Ridge Inc. says operations at the Willow Lake Mine near Harrisburg are unsustainable. The mine closing will affect about 400 workers.

Small Business Saturday Pays Big Dividends

Many holiday shoppers rush out to big chain stores on Black Friday, but an initiative for local businesses urges people to visit small shops tomorrow. Holiday shopping is crucial for many businesses recovering from a rough economy. Small Business Saturday encourages shoppers to shop locally. Chris Wooldridge is district director for the Kentucky Small Business Development Center. He says small businesses tend to fall off many consumers' "radar" when compared to so-called "big box stores" on Black Fridays and Cyber Mondays, which usher in the Christmas shopping season.

Plans Under Way for New W. Ky. Farm

An Indiana-based company plans to open a turkey farm in McLean County. Executives with Farbest  Farms outlined plans for the venture this week at a Fiscal Court meeting in McLean. The Messenger-Inquirer reports the plans include a 50-acre brooding hub where turkeys would be hatched and raised until they are 30 days old.
