Brookport Tornado


The Federal Emergency Management Agency has denied an aid request from local Illinois governments impacted by the tornadoes that swept across the state late last year.

Illinois officials say more than 2,000 people have applied for federal assistance following November tornadoes that prompted disaster declaration in their counties.

Gov. Pat Quinn’s office says the government has approved more than $1.6 million in federal grants and more than $5.6 million in low-interest loans.

Aid groups are switching from emergency response to recovery in Brookport, Illinois more than a month after a tornado outbreak  took three lives and destroyed dozens of homes.

The hospital condition of the mayor of tornado-ravaged Brookport, Illinois is improving, days after he was injured in a car wreck. A spokeswoman for Deaconess Hospital in Evansville said Mayor John Klaffer was in stable condition Monday.

The following agencies and groups are collecting certain items or donations for tornado victims in Brookport, Ill.:

Massac County Sheriff's Department is accepting donations of checks and gift cards only.
SIU Credit Union: all branches collecting monetary donations.
Victory Full Gospel Church: food and supplies.
Hope Unlimited Family Care Center: diapers, wipes, blankets, clothing, cleaning supplies and baby food.

Sunday’s Tornado that struck Brookport, Illinois contained peak winds of 145-mph and stayed on the ground for 11.5 miles. The national weather service published the damage survey of the EF-3 tornado late Monday afternoon.
