A federal complaint has been filed against a barge company alleging they discharged sewage and polluted wastewater into the Ohio River at Cairo, Illinois for more than half a decade.

A regional freight barge manufacturer has gained an Environmental Protection Agency award for efforts to reduce greenhouse gases emitted from its fleet.  

Ingram Barge Company received the EPA’s SmartWay Excellence Award for its commitment to CO2 emission reduction, making it the first barge company to do so.

The U.S. Coast Guard is considering a policy change to allow the transport of wastewater from hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, on inland waterways.

Oil and gas companies currently transport most of their wastewater by truck from the shale fields in Ohio and Pennsylvania to states with lighter regulations on storage, like Texas and Louisiana.

Now companies want to take the river route to save on fuel and personnel costs. But chemicals and other minerals in the wastewater could prove too risky to move by barge.

US 60 Ledbetter Barges/Crane on Track to Reopen

A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to resume hanging steel on the new US 60 Ledbetter Bridge next Monday. C.J. Mahan Contracting has had construction crews working on other phases of the project while a salvage team has been working to re-float a crane barge at the site.
