Kentucky State Veterinarian Dr. Robert Stout has lifted avian influenza surveillance zones in Christian County following negative test results.

A Christian County broiler flock of 22,000 hens has been culled after birds tested positive for avian influenza. 

Authorities are closing live poultry markets in multiple Chinese cities and provinces, in an effort to stop the spread of the deadly H7N9 strain of the avian flu virus.

"Officials in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou – population 17 million – found more than 30 percent of the city's poultry markets are contaminated with the H7N9 strain of bird flu," as NPR's Rob Schmitz reports from Shanghai.

Kentucky officials have re-enacted a state-wide ban on bird sales and movement in response to an avian flu outbreak in southern Indiana.  State Veterinarian Robert Stout says he took the step out of an abundance of caution.
