We may resign Afghanistan to a sort of purgatory status. It's not great...not that bad either...kind of so-so. 

NPR reports President Obama paid a surprise visit to Afghanistan, and he says having just part of the country out of Taliban hands might be the best we can do.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says the military will not be intimidated by the attacks on U.S. soldiers in the wake of the Quran burnings. He made the comments today during a visit to Fort Campbell, where hundreds of soldiers will deploy this year as a part of a new Afghanistan advisory mission. Panetta told troops the attacks on coalition forces by Afghan security forces or insurgents wearing Afghan uniforms were "isolated incidents." He says insurgents are using the attacks to undermine American forces because the Taliban is not effective at combat operations. Six U.S.

In Louisiana, the military has created a mini-Afghanistan. Except this one has crocs and Cajuns. 

NPR reports the central Louisiana facility is used to train soldiers how to train soldiers as the US lets Afghan troops take the lead. 

The region saw a great deal of storm damage, and there’s more on the way.

The family of a 44-year-old U.S. military officer from western Kentucky shot to death in Afghanistan over the weekend says his funeral will be held in Florida, where his wife and children live.  Air Force Lieutenant Colonel John Darin Loftis was one of two high-ranking military officials killed Saturday in an attack at the Afghan Interior Ministry in Kabul. He was originally from Paducah, and attended high school in Calloway County.
