State Auditor has Recommendations for MCO's

State Auditor Adam Edelen has released ten recommendations for a more efficient Medicaid Managed Care system in Kentucky.

For weeks, the MCOs, lawmakers, health care providers and patients have tussled over the new system, which was implemented quickly to plug a budget gap.

MCOs have promised lawmakers that the majority of problems are fixed, but some areas like pharmacy and mental health, are still having issues.

Rather than directly auditing the managed care organizations, Edelen instead looked into how the system was using taxpayer’s funds.

State Audit Report Released

State Auditor Adam Edelen says the first phase of a state audit found problems with reviews of bridge inspection reports conducted by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Of 40 reports tested by auditors, 8 were not reviewed. KYTC spokesman Chuck Wolfe says most of the un-reviewed reports came from an eastern Kentucky district, where personnel shortages had led to a buildup of pending reviews.

Kentucky House Committee Considers Consolidation Proposal

Kentucky’s House Local Government Committee is set to consider legislation establishing a process for counties to voluntarily unify. Bill sponsor Republican Adam Koenig says the measure means two or more counties could consolidate if voters approve. Unification has long been a hot topic in the 120 county Commonwealth. But local officials have been resistant to the idea. Koenig says his proposal should be acceptable because it doesn't force consolidation.
