Strand Of Oaks On World Cafe

"There's zero symbolism, and that's the scary thing," Timothy Showalter says. "Every single lyric is either a direct thought or a direct event. It's exactly my life."

The Philly musician who performs under the name Strand of Oaks is talking about his new album, HEAL, which in a way functions as a memoir. Fueled by a string of tragic personal incidents, from infidelity to a near-fatal auto accident, the album brings these events to life, from the teenage isolation of "Goshen 97" (a track featuring J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr.) to the bittersweet romance of "Plymouth."

Australian electronic musician Chet Faker has been releasing singles and EPs on the web for a few years, attracting a fair bit of attention for his popular cover of Blackstreet's "No Diggity." Faker accompanies his soulful singing with loops, samples and keyboards, as he improvises over tracks he'd recorded in the studio. Earlier this month, he released his full-length U.S. debut, Built on Glass.

Formed in Dallas, Old 97's first got together more than 20 years ago. The band's latest album, Most Messed Up, hearkens back to the wild spirit of earlier albums like Too Far to Care; its sprawling opening track, "Longer Than You've Been Alive," recalls the group's history and has lead singer Rhett Miller fully embracing his rock 'n' roll lifestyle.

In hour one of Tuesday's installment of World Cafe, we talk with Elvis Costello and The Roots' powerhouse drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson about how they met and came to utilize hip-hop techniques to make a non-hip-hop record. Originally published on Thu September 26, 2013 10:46 am

Singer-songwriter Jack Johnson recently released his sixth album of breezy, easygoing songs: From Here to Now to You finds him returning to more acoustic arrangements after 2010's To the Sea, which featured more instrumental variations, including electric guitars.

In this World Cafe session, Johnson credits much of his success to his wife, and dedicates a couple of songs to their relationship. The singer also discusses his Hawaiian home and the influence of the indigenous slack-key guitar culture on his style.
