World Cafe's Sense of Place series takes the show to Iceland, where Ólafur Páll Gunnarsson — known by most as Óli Palli — was voted the most important Icelandic radio personality of the 20th century. He can be heard on the Icelandic public radio station Rás 2, on which he hosts the music programs Poppaland and Rokkland.

Here, he joins World Cafe to play new Icelandic pop from newcomer Grísalappalísa, as well as longtime favorite GusGus. He also tackles the question of why so many Icelandic artists sing in English.

First Aid Kit On World Cafe

Sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg of First Aid Kit have become an international sensation, thanks in part to the gorgeous harmonies in their sweet folk-pop songs. The Swedish duo's success owes a lot to the Internet: It was a batch of MySpace recordings that got the pair discovered in 2007 by Karin Dreijer Andersson of fellow Swedish band The Knife.

King Khan & The Shrines On World Cafe

King Khan & The Shrines, a psychedelic garage/soul band from Berlin, is led by the charismatic Arish Khan. Khan grew up in Montreal, the son of South Asian parents, and first played in punk bands. The group has been recording together since 2000 and released its latest album, Idle No More, last fall.

Khan is fascinating: He's both an over-the-top performer and a far-ranging thinker. In this session, he discusses the new album's title, which comes from a Canadian indigenous people's movement.

  • Hear Two Songs By Kutosis

We call on Cardiff, Wales for our World Cafe: Next artists this week. Kutosis is a power-pop trio whose music has been described as "post punk, reverb-drenched and breezy." Their second album, Dream It Away, was released in June on Jealous Lover's Club Records. From album artwork to song titles, this group is all about surfing — a fitting match for their sunny power pop.

Don't forget to download our World Cafe: Next podcast with two songs from Kutosis.

World Cafe's July 4th Mixtape

Appeal to the senses this Independence Day — before watching fireworks, treat your ears to this playlist of World Cafe favorites.

I love mixtapes. Don't we all? If I'm having a party or even a dinner, I meticulously program the music — even though, if it's a good party, no one will hear it because they're all talking!

Here's my Fourth of July mixtape for you. No in-studio guest today, just a wide variety of music with the only stipulation that "America," "American" or "U.S." has to be somewhere in the title. It's not even all from the U.S.! There's a version of the Brazilian singer Jorge Ben's "So Loco Porti America." There are some stirring classic tunes from Tom Petty and The Steve Miller Band.

Chrissie Hynde On World Cafe

Chrissie Hynde.
Dean Chalkley Courtesy of the artist

Ever since she helped form The Pretenders in the late 1970s, Chrissie Hynde has identified as part of the legendary British band. Recently, though, Hynde set out as a solo artist, releasing the album Stockholm in June.

Hynde tells World Cafe that the album is a product of collaboration; she even traveled to Sweden to work with Bjorn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John. That pairing led to others, including unlikely appearances by Neil Young and John McEnroe.

Hear a four-song set on today's World Cafe.

Dan Croll On World Cafe

English electro-pop musician Dan Croll released his debut album earlier this year; it's titled Sweet Disarray, an apt name for such a stylistically rich record.

Croll went to school for music at the Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts, which was founded by Paul McCartney. Croll was even chosen by his classmates to meet Sir Paul; we'll hear that story and a live set in the studio today.
