Sounds Good

We continue our occasional series previewing good reads for young adults from Katherine Farmer, Coordinator of the Racers Children's Preview Collection at Murray State University. This week's recommended read is The White Bicycle, by Beverly Brenna, a 2013 Printz Honor coming-of-age adventure told from the perspective of Taylor Jane, a young woman with Asperger's Syndrome. Booklist calls this story, for ages 14 to 17, a "finespun gem" that would be "a shame" to miss. 

Murray Attorney Mark Blankenship joins Kate Lochte on Sounds Good to discuss how youths need to realize that what used to be pranks now lead to involvement with the courts. 

Chris and Randy Janne host Art in the Garden, an art show/sale and garden tour this Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at their home at 3223 Buckner Lane in Paducah. Admission is free. Proceeds from art sales go to the J. Darin Loftis Memorial Scholarship Fund. It was established by Calloway County High School Class of '86 to honor their classmate who was killed while serving in Kabul, Afghanistan in 2012. Both hours of Sounds Good today feature directors of upcoming productions at the Market House Theatre in Paducah. "Tomato Plant Girl," by Wesley Middleton, opens May 9-12 in the Studio Theatre and follows a new girl in town, sharing a garden with a 'bossy best friend,' when mayhem ensues. 'Love, Loss, and What I Wore" is May 11 and 12th at 7 p.m. This special production for Mother's Day weekend uses clothing and accessories to tell a funny, wistful, and universal stories that women can identify with. Hear both interviews below.

Family Service Society, Inc. of Paducah provides immediate emergency relief to residents of Paducah and McCracken County. Proceeds of a Mother's Day weekend run benefit the Society. Kate Lochte speaks with Iron MOM Half-Marathon Coordinator Amy Peal, President of Rehab Associates Foundation on Sounds Good. The half-marathon is Saturday, May 11. Kate Lochte speaks with McCracken County Public Library’s Director Julie Hart on Sounds Good. The Library has added a new computer system designed for children ages 2 to 8, the A.W.E. Early Literacy Station. This is a new service at the library where children can play educational games on specialized computers, geared towards learning math, reading and language skills. Kate Lochte speaks with western Kentucky native and author Bobbie Smith Bryant on Sounds Good. Bryant was born in the Black Patch of Calloway County and shares her family's heritage in a new book titled, "Passions of the Black Patch: Cooking and Quilting in Western Kentucky." Black Patch is the region in western Kentucky and northwestern Tennessee where a specific type of tobacco, which has distinctly dark leaves, is grown.
