Sounds Good

Charlotte Beahan is Professor of History at Murray State and her research interests are East Asia, women’s history and world civilizations.  This afternoon at 4 in Faculty Hall Room 506, Dr. Beahan is the presenter for the next in a series of Department of History Research Forums, all of which are open to the community.  Beahan previews the event in a conversation with Kate Lochte on Sounds Good.

Dr. Sue-Jean Park of the Murray State University Department of Music faculty, concert master of the Paducah and Jackson Symphony Orchestras, performs a 54 minute violin concerto twice in the next two weeks. Dr. Park learned the strenuous composition from Yale faculty member and famed American violinist Eric Friedman, who in turn had been taught the piece by the legendary Jascha Heifetz. We hear the violinist's remarkable story with Kate Lochte.

You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown is a delightful musical based on Charles Schulz' "Peanuts" cartoon characters and an average day in the life of Charlie Brown. The show features vignettes and songs, from Valentine's Day to baseball season, from wild optimism to utter despair, all mixed in with the lives of Charlie's friends. Playhouse in the Park in Murray opens the show Friday, February 22, and runs until Sunday, March 3. Betty Lingenfelter received a liver 15 years ago via the Kentucky Organ Donor program. She waited a year and a half before a liver became available. She's grateful for the time and worries everyday about others who are now waiting like she did. Today, Betty is a Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliate and a Christian County Chamber Diplomat and spoke with Kate Lochte about her work with the program on Sounds Good.

Sloan Foundation & Coolidge Corner Theatre through the Art House Convergence Film Theatres Conference, an educational program organized by the Sundance Institute. Paris, Tennessee's Lee Academy for the Arts hosts a concert with Dan Knowles and his Hot Band Saturday, February 23 at 7 p.m. as a fundraiser for the academy, especially for the new ceramics program. Dan Knowles and Academy supporter Ray Hardy stopped by the studio today during Sounds Good to speak about the event and play some music.

Alissa Keller is with us next. She's the Executive Director of the Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County clustered around the Pennyroyal Area Museum at 217 East 9th Street, in the old post office building. The other museums across the street include the Charles Jackson Circus Museum and the Woody Winfree Fire-Transportation Museum. Today's conversation centers on what's happening at The Pennyroyal this month and next. Kate Lochte has the conversation. 

Murray State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the MSU Jazz Orchestra welcome guest trumpet virtuoso Allen Vizzutti Friday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. in Lovett Auditorium. The concert is part of the 66th annual Quad-State Senior High Band Festival. A highlight of the Wind Ensemble is the premiere of KY composer James Curnow's new work "A Moment in Time" exploring the writings of Matsuo Basho of 17th Century Japan and Henry David Thoreau of 19th Century Massachusetts. Dennis Johnson, Director of Bands at Murray State University, spoke with Tracy on Sounds Good about the upcoming performance.

Mark Twain comes to Muhlenberg County's Felix E. Martin Jr. Hall in Greenville tomorrow night (February 16) at 7. We speak with John Chappell who has toured with this actor's portrait of Samuel Clemens for over a decade, in a live, amusing recreation of the great 19th Century American author. Kate Lochte spoke with Chappell on Sounds Good.
