About The Show

The music on Sounds Good is a mix of legacy artists who are still making great music now (Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Bonnie Raitt) deep cuts from classic artists (The Band, The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Talking Heads, REM) great contemporary artists who don' t receive commercial airplay (Neko Case, Wilco, Jack White, Darrell Scott, The Black Keys) and those who defy the boundaries of categorization (Punch Brothers, Bela Fleck, Ry Cooder, Bill Frisell, Justin Townes Earle). You'll also get a bit of World music, Blues, Soul/R&B, Reggae and Jazz.

Additionally, you'll hear interviews with newsmakers and community leaders, live music from some of our region's best musicians, our community events calendar and more.

MSU Music Professor Releases Solo Piano Gospel Album

Dr. Todd Hill, Director of Jazz Ensembles at Murray State University, releases his new album "The Brown-Back Hymnal" a collection of solo piano gospel songs. On Sounds Good, we listen to some cuts from his album and talk about the inspiration for what Hill calls "Aunt Flossie meets Dr. John having a pianistic conversation on a dark corner in New Orleans."

Kentucky Autism Training Center Neurologist Comes to Lourdes Hospital

Pediatric neurologist Dr. Gregory Barnes from the Commission for Children with Special Healthcare Needs in Louisville is opening the Office of Autism in Kentucky, a statewide and regional office providing support for families and caregivers by coordinating resources, and giving referrals -  local points of contact - of specific physicians such as pediatric developmental doctors. Crissy Ramey of Families on the Spectrum comes back to Sounds Good to tell us about the meeting at Lourdes tomorrow night (Tuesday, July 22), welcoming Dr. Barnes to Paducah.

Ice Cream and Antique Cars Galore in Downtown Paris

"You can eat ice cream for three hours!" This Saturday, Downtown Paris hosts their annual Ice Cream Social and Antique Car Show fundraiser. Dig in to 180 gallons of ice cream at themed booths and see shiny cars on display. There's also ice-cream eating contests, frozen t-shirt contests, and inflatables for kids. Downtown Paris Association's Director Kathy Ray joins Sounds Good with the details.

Avant-Garde Absurdism, 'Bald Soprano' On-Stage in Aurora

This weekend and next offer four more opportunities for enjoying Eugene Ionesco's famed absurdist comedy play, The Bald Soprano, at Twilight Theatre at Kenlake State Resort Park in Aurora. Cast members Kiersten Kellersberger, Taylor Davis, E.B. McKinney and Lane French stop by Sounds Good to act out the "Bobby Scene" and attempt to explain this snappy, fast-paced play.

MSU Professor Gives Context to Central American Refugee Crisis

Thursday, NPR's Steve Inskeep spoke with Sonia Nazario, the author of "Enrique's Journey," a book about a child from Honduras who reached the United States, and she says many of the thousands of Central American children crossing the U.S. - Mexico border are actually refugees, not migrants who mostly need to be sent home. Murray State College of Humanities and Fine Arts History Professor Dr. Bill Schell's areas of research involve Latin America and Mexico and Kate Lochte asks him about the background for the current spike in numbers of children trying to enter the U.S.

Nearly 24,000 Books for Sale in Paducah, Including Rare and Out-of-Print Works

This year's Friends of the McCracken County Public Library book sale is likely to be one of their largest, featuring an estimated 24,000 books, from genres including art, history, science fiction, fantasy, mystery, westerns, literary fiction, large print works and children's books. They received a large donation from a book store going out of business as well as several rare and out-of-print works. On Sounds Good, Jennie Boyarski speaks with Kate Lochte about the sale and some of the unique finds.

"Lights, Camera, Action! Hopkinsville Goes to the Show"  is the featured summer exhibit at the Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Chrsitian County. Executive Director Alissa Keller takes us on a walk through the history of Hopkinsville's early 20th century theatres, including the first "moving picture show" and the first "air cooled" building on Sounds Good today.

Update: Beshear Cuts Budget to Balance $90.9-Million Kentucky Budget Shortfall

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear signed a budget reduction order Wednesday, announcing that there would be a $21 million dollar transfer from reserves bringing the state's rainy day fund to $77 million. Murray State Distinguished Professor of Economics Dr. Jim McCoy serves on the Kentucky Consensus Forecast Group. He puts in perspective  the origins, anomalies, and implications of the Commonwealth's $91 million shortfall during Sounds Good.

[Slideshow] TN Wildlife Refuge Opens New Visitor Center, Saturday

The Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge near Paris, Tennessee, has opened a new visitors center. The 12,000 square foot center features day-long activities this Saturday for its grand opening. Joan Stevens joins Kate Lochte on Sounds Good to talk about children's activities and describes the things you'll see while standing out on their scenic veranda overlooking Kentucky Lake.
