About The Show

The music on Sounds Good is a mix of legacy artists who are still making great music now (Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Bonnie Raitt) deep cuts from classic artists (The Band, The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Talking Heads, REM) great contemporary artists who don' t receive commercial airplay (Neko Case, Wilco, Jack White, Darrell Scott, The Black Keys) and those who defy the boundaries of categorization (Punch Brothers, Bela Fleck, Ry Cooder, Bill Frisell, Justin Townes Earle). You'll also get a bit of World music, Blues, Soul/R&B, Reggae and Jazz.

Additionally, you'll hear interviews with newsmakers and community leaders, live music from some of our region's best musicians, our community events calendar and more.

Glema Mahr Showcases 'Masterful' Kentucky Music and Art

Glema Mahr Center for the Arts at Madisonville Community College hosts two nights of Americana music from Kentucky. The Glema Center's Executive Director Brad Downall visited Sounds Good Monday to chat about the music and the Kentucky Folk Art Apprenticeships show "The Makings of a Master" that is in the Anne P. It's always exciting to hear about a young person from our region who is making headway in his or her chosen profession. Kate Lochte profiles Paducah native Victor Mazzone, involved with the new LA group The Silver Lake Chorus. We hear performances that he's doing with the choral group creating a buzz for itself and elevating his singing/acting career, which began with the Paducah Symphony Chorus.

International Education Week: A Global Adventure at Murray State

November 12 through 15 is International Education Week nationwide. Murray State's Institute for International Studies has an extensive schedule of lectures, demonstrations, and discussions throughout the week, culminating in the Global Alumni Distinguished Lecture Series Thursday, November 15, 7 p.m. in the Curris Center Theatre. Melanie McCallon dropped by Sounds Good to highlight events (get a schedule at murraystate.edu/iew). She's the Associate Director of the Education Abroad program in the IIS.

Murray Dance Stars Raises Funds for Playhouse in the Park

The event Murray Dance Stars raises money for Murray's Playhouse in the Park on Saturday, November 17 at MSU's Curris Center Ballroom. One of the dancers, Doris Clark Sarr, visited Sounds Good in her quest to challenge other dancers (Lisa Satterwhite, Amanda Lough, Susan Williams, Mark Boggess and Eric Phelps) in their competition to sell the most tickets and tables for the show. Tickets are available at the door, at Playhouse in the Park, and from any dancer. General Admission is $25. Students with ID $15. Available at the door. There's a reception at 6 p.m. and the program begins at 7. Sarr directs Murray State's Adventures in Math and Science program and she's VP, Student Affairs.

MSU Music Dept. Presents 'The Magic Flute'

MSU's Music Department presents Mozart's The Magic Flute in an adaptation for young audiences Saturday, November 10, and Sunday, November 11, with shows at 2 and 6 p.m. both days in Performing Arts Hall of Old Fine Arts across from Waterfield Library. Director Dr. Christopher Mitchell visited Sounds Good Wednesday with MSU students who are performing in the opera: Grace Lauzon (Pamina/1st Lady) and Michael Martin (Papageno/Sarastro). They agree that truth telling is the most powerful message from the music, written for its first performance on September 30, 1791.

'Five Writers Talk' at Murray State University

Murray State’s Watkins Chair in Creative Writing Instructor, Martin Roper, asked other Creative Writing faculty colleagues to answer about their art before a live audience who had submitted questions in advance. Kate Lochte of WKMS asks the questions. During Sounds Good today we feature the entire forum as recorded October 29th in Performing Arts Hall. Dale Ray Phillips, Anne Neelon, Carrie Jerrell and Squire Babcock join Mr. Roper on stage.

Teaching Kids about the Outdoors at the Hazlewood Every Child Outdoors Center

Set on 380 acres on Kentucky Lake near Paris Landing State Park, a former Girl Scout camp now hosts programs encouraging healthy eating and outdoor activity for young people and their families. Just back from hiking the Appalachian Trail, Hazlewood Every Child Outdoors Center programming coordinator Vicki Jo Stevens-Valentine is passionate about teaching us how to make the most out of our beautiful region's natural assets.

There’s a Bluegrass Benefit Friday night, November 1.  A life-threatening infection put Jackson Purchase Friends of Bluegrass’s Tony Williams in Vanderbilt hospital for a month and a half.  Tony’s home and better now.   His award-winning guitarist and vocalist son Josh Williams dropped in on Music from the Front Porch with Mark Welch last Saturday to talk about the benefit.
