About The Show

The music on Sounds Good is a mix of legacy artists who are still making great music now (Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Bonnie Raitt) deep cuts from classic artists (The Band, The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Talking Heads, REM) great contemporary artists who don' t receive commercial airplay (Neko Case, Wilco, Jack White, Darrell Scott, The Black Keys) and those who defy the boundaries of categorization (Punch Brothers, Bela Fleck, Ry Cooder, Bill Frisell, Justin Townes Earle). You'll also get a bit of World music, Blues, Soul/R&B, Reggae and Jazz.

Additionally, you'll hear interviews with newsmakers and community leaders, live music from some of our region's best musicians, our community events calendar and more.

New Biking Trails, More Coming to Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park

There was an organizational meeting for the Friends of Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park in November with the stated purposes of revitalizing existing facilities; expanding visitor options;  and adding to our region's outdoor recreation tourism. Hydrologist John Tillson is among the founders of the new Friends group and speaks with Kate Lochte about the group's inspiration:  the Marshall County High School Mountain BikeTeam, which distinguished itself in competitions shortly after its formation.

Essayist Previews First Book at Murray State's MFA Reading Series

Essayist, journalist and translator Riley Hanick is Murray State's Watkins Chair in Creative Writing. Next Wednesday, January 8, he is among featured writers for the MSU/MFA in Creative Writing Reading Series. His work has appeared in The Sonora Review, Seneca Review, No Depression and other publications. Kate Lochte spoke with Hanick for Sounds Good to learn more about his first book.

City of Murray and MSU Eye Changes to 16th Street to Address Traffic/Pedestrian Problems

Caution signs at crosswalks address a growing issue in Murray:  traffic and pedestrians using 16th Street.  Murray State's Chief Facilities Officer and Director of Facilities Design and Construction Kim Oatman presented a study of the situation to the Board of Regents at its most recent meeting. We learn more about it with Kate Lochte's recent conversation with Mr. Oatman.

YA Novelist and Poet Cristina Garcia Comes to MSU for Reading Series

The darkly comic novel King of Cuba is Cristina Garcia's latest work. Garcia  is one of the writers featured at next week's Murray State MFA in Creative Writing January Reading Series. She reads Tuesday, January 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Clara Eagle Gallery, sixth floor,  Doyle Fine Arts Building. Born in Havana, and raised in New York City, Garcia has written six novels; she's edited two anthologies; she's authored works for young readers; a collection of poetry, and a young adult novel.

Uncommon Mystery: Killings at Badger's Drift

Professor Emeritus Michael Cohen reviews British author Caroline Graham's first mystery, The Killings At Badger's Drift,  published in 1987 and adapted ten years later as the first episode of the British ITV series The Midsomer Murders.

Michael Cohen is Professor Emeritus at Murray State University. He is the author of Murder Most Fair:  The Appeal of Mystery Fiction, published by Fairleigh Dickinson University Press in 2000.

Poet Laureate of Wisconsin Comes to Murray State for Reading Series

The new year opens next week with the Murray State Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program's first reading series. The readings are open to the public in Clara Eagle Art Gallery, sixth floor Doyle Fine Arts at Fifteenth and Olive Streets. We meet writer Max Garland who lives and teaches in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Pope County Documentarian on The Making of "They Will Endure"

A few weeks back we heard about holiday activities raising money for a new documentary produced about Pope County and today we meet its producer. The film is titled "They Will Endure," and it covers how the county was settled in the late eighteenth century to the great flood of 1937.

It was inspired by the research, writings, and archives of the late Pope County historian Mildred McCormick. Producer Richard Kuenneke took on the job of weaving McCormick's work together with interviews of residents and other historians.

Wastelanders Exhibiting New Work At New Years Eve Reception

Paducah's artist group called "The Wastelanders" offers a New Year's Eve Opening Reception party on Tuesday, December 31, from 6 to 9 p.m. to celebrate new work by its members and guest artists.  Paducah native David Brown, now art director for the Lexington based company, The Group Travel Leader, spoke with Kate Lochte about what he and others will be showing at the Yeiser January 2 through 11.
