About The Show

The music on Sounds Good is a mix of legacy artists who are still making great music now (Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Bonnie Raitt) deep cuts from classic artists (The Band, The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Talking Heads, REM) great contemporary artists who don' t receive commercial airplay (Neko Case, Wilco, Jack White, Darrell Scott, The Black Keys) and those who defy the boundaries of categorization (Punch Brothers, Bela Fleck, Ry Cooder, Bill Frisell, Justin Townes Earle). You'll also get a bit of World music, Blues, Soul/R&B, Reggae and Jazz.

Additionally, you'll hear interviews with newsmakers and community leaders, live music from some of our region's best musicians, our community events calendar and more.

50th Anniversary Civil Rights March on Frankfort

As a young man, shortly out of high school, John J. Johnson was the president of the local NAACP in his hometown of Franklin, Kentucky, and was a member of the executive committee for the March on Frankfort 50 years ago, which is being commemorated this year. That first march touched the nation and ultimately helped lead to the passage of the U.S. Civil Rights Act on July 2 of the same year. Today, John J. Johnson is the Executive Director of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights, and speaks with Kate Lochte.

Kentucky's House Bill 171, known as the Statewide Fairness Bill, is gaining traction in Frankfort, recently signing 16 co-sponsors, a record number of sponsors. Murray State's LGBT and URSA Program Coordinator and Vice Chair, President’s Commission on Diversity and Inclusion, Jody Randall joins Kate Lochte to talk more about this bill and the way legislators are beginning to think of discrimination protection for the LGBT community.

Bluegrass Grammy Nominee James King Plays Draffenville

This year's Grammy nominations for Best Bluegrass Album include "Three Chords and the Truth" along with projects by The Boxcars, Dailey & Vincent, Della Mae, and Del McCoury Band. Writing for the CD release of "Three Chords and the Truth," Randy Pitts recalls hearing James King for the first time in 1992 in Owensboro and describes him as a "stocky ex-Marine whose voice bowled me over." Market House Theatre Opens the Year with New Farce

Paducah's Market House Theatre opens 'The Fox on the Fairway' tonight (January 16). It's a tribute to golf and to the great English farces of the 1930's and 40's. Playwright Ken Ludwig said in a 2010 interview that the play is "really about love - and the joys and angst and craziness of love - in two different eras of our life." Kate Lochte speaks with Market House Director Michael Cochran, who is directing the production that runs through January 26.

Madisonville Hosts One of Kentucky's Largest MLK Celebrations

Hopkins County reaches a milestone Saturday with a program celebrating the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. legacy that is one of the longest-running and largest MLK national holiday recognition services in Kentucky. Saturday's event theme is "Yesterday's Dream, Tomorrow's Reality," with the program starting at 4 p.m. in the Madisonville Community College Health Campus Byrnes Auditorium, at 750 Laffoon Street in Madisonville. Kate Lochte speaks with Tim W. Thomas of Madisonville, who serves as a Commissioner with the Kentucky Human Rights Commission.

The Yeiser Art Center is accepting entries for the 2014 Fantastic Fibers competitive exhibition until January 25. This is the second year the event is officially sanctioned by the American Quilters Society. Acclaimed quilter Caryl-Bryer Fallert-Gentry is the juror this year.
