Lexington Health Department crews are taking additional steps to prevent the possible spread of zika in Fayette County. Lexington’s first confirmed zika case involves an individual who contracted the disease in another country.

An additional mosquito spraying was done around the residence in the 40502 zip code area, where the infected person has been known to stay.

Additionally, Environmental Health Supervisor Luke Mathias says a private firm has done barrier treatments. “These are done generally with backpack sprayers. It’s probably more of an extensive treatment than what were able to provide with our truck spraying.”

Mathias said. Environmental Health Supervisor Luke Mathias says UK insect specialists indicate further breeding of zika carrying mosquitos is not likely this fall. “No zika carrying mosquitos have been found in Kentucky,” he said. And there is no reason to think the virus will spread to other people or other mosquitoes at this time.

However, overwintering of the mosquito eggs could pose a problem next spring.
