WKU to Hold Safe Zone Sessions on Gender Identity

Western Kentucky University is hosting training sessions for faculty, staff and students who are interested in reaching out to members of the LGBT community.

The school is conducting two “Safe Zone” trainings Tuesday. The goal of the sessions is to educate members of the campus community about issues affecting LGBT students and employees.

WKU counselor Brian Lee says those who complete the training have the option of displaying a “Safe Zone” emblem that they can put on their office or residence hall door.

“That sort of signifies that this is a place where an individual can come in and talk about issues related to sexual identity, related to gender identity, and can be considered a safe environment where an individual can talk and sort of process these concerns,” Lee said.

Lee says 52 Safe Zone trainings have been conducted on W-K-U campuses since 2014.
