Yesterday’s sun helped melt some of the near record snow Kentucky experienced earlier in the week, but this morning saw another 1 to 2 inches of the white powder across the region.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd said crews are working on the roads and most main routes are fairly clear.
"I would say it goes from snow pack to maybe 60 to 80 percent slush covered. There are some slick spots out here but our crews have been out since 3:00 AM plowing and salting," Todd said.
But, Todd says whatever ice is on the road this afternoon will likely stay there until temperatures get above freezing this Saturday.
“Our big concern today is trying to get roads in as good a shape as possible before the temperatures plummet tonight," Todd said. "Because once we get down into single digits and minus numbers over night, it's going to be very difficult for us to do much to improve driving conditions.”
Salt and ice fighting chemicals stop working in the single digits and lower. Drives are still discouraged from unnecessary travel.
