via vucommodores.com

Vanderbilt freshman pitcher Donny Everett drowned Thursday while fishing in Tennessee. The Clarksville native was 19.

The Coffee County Sheriff's Department says Everett was with two teammates and two other people when he tried to swim across Normandy Lake near a bridge. Divers found Everett 15 feet from the shore.

Everett is a right-hander from Clarksville, Tennessee, who had gone 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 12 innings this season.

Everett was the Tennessee 2015 Gatorade player of the year.

Vanderbilt is the 2014 national champion and 2015 College World Series runner-up. The school is to open NCAA Tournament play Friday night by hosting Xavier.
