(Update) NWS: Harvey Remnants Move Through The Region

Friday Mid-Morning Update:

Remnants of Harvey continue eastward on Friday. Moderate to heavy rains should end by Friday evening. No severe weather is expected, however a flash flood watch and a lake wind advisory remain in effect until 7. Winds around 20 miles per hour, with gusts up to 40 remain a concern. Avoid flooded areas.

Friday Early Morning Update:

The National Weather Service in Paducah has a flood watch in effect region wide until 7 p.m. Friday as remnants of Harvey move through the area. Isolated thunderstorms with lightning and locally heavy rainfall is expected. The heaviest rainfall is further south and east along the Kentucky-Tennessee border. Flooding and gusting winds reaching 36 mph on Friday are also a concern.

The National Weather Service in Paducah forecasts the heaviest rainfall is Thursday night into early Friday morning. 

Remnants of Harvey are coming through the region with rainfall amounts dramatically varying by location as depicted above, with slight rainfall in southern Illinois, to heavier totals of up to eight inches southeast of Hopkinsville. Lightning, strong winds and flooding are also a concern. 

Kentucky Emergency Management is activating the State Emergency Operations Center at 4 p.m. to monitor the storm. It is activating at a Level 4, which means personnel monitoring the weather system. The activation positions KYEM to respond quickly and efficiently, according to director Michael Dossett in a release.

The National Weather Service is warning of heavy rain and gusting winds as remnants of the devastating Tropical Storm Harvey move through the region Thursday evening and Friday. 

Rainfall amounts vary by region with less than an inch in southern Illinois to 6 inches in west Kentucky near the Tennessee border. The areas of Murray and Hopkinsville are expected to have the highest local rainfall. 

Flooding is a concern. Much of the region is in a flash flood watch Thursday evening through Friday evening. Avoid creeks and streams. 

Gusting winds are also a also a concern, with winds reaching 20-30 miles per hour, and possibly up to 40 mph in parts of west Kentucky.

The rain is expected to exit the area by Friday night, for a dry and sunny Labor Day weekend.
