UPDATE: Murray State's Provost Is Stepping Down to Be 'On Loan' to CPE

Murray State University-Provided

Murray State University's chief academic officer is stepping down from his post to work with Kentucky’s Council on Postsecondary Education through an agreement that allows him to remain a tenured Murray State faculty member.

CPE Spokesperson Sue Patrick says for the next year Jay Morgan will work solely for the council and won't be teaching.  Morgan's position is new for the CPE. His title will be the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

According to the CPE, Dr. Morgan will lead the college readiness, access and student success  areas of the CPE’s Academic Affairs unit. Morgan will manage Academic Affairs staff and initiatives and lead statewide improvement efforts in these policy areas, which will be a key focus of the state’s strategic agenda that will roll-out in September.

Patrick says Morgan's compensation will remain the same as his current salary which is listed at 164,004.00 by the state website,KY Open Door. Patrick says Morgan's contract is for one year with the option for a renewal. She says multiple retirements have prompted the creation of the position that will report to Aaron Thompson, Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer

“We are truly excited to have someone of Jay’s academic background, deep knowledge and campus experiences to lead the important policy areas of college readiness, access and student success,” said Thompson.

Morgan’s appointment comes with a memorandum of agreement between the CPE and Murray State that will allow Morgan to maintain his faculty position within the Hutson School of Agriculture. Murray State president Bob Davies hasn’t announced plans for Morgan’s interim replacement.

Morgan holds a B.S. degree in agriculture science and business, and an M.S. in agriculture science from MSU. He earned his Ph.D. at Oklahoma State University in agricultural education.

Prior to Morgan’s stint as provost he has been the associate provost for graduate education and research at Murray State. He began teaching at MSU in 1997 in the Hutson School of Agriculture.

Morgan also served as the faculty regent at MSU from 2007-10, and has contributed service to a number of university committees.

Morgan's last day as Provost is June 30.
