The Tennessee Valley Authority is holding an open house in Paducah on Tuesday to discuss plans to close a coal ash storage facility at its Shawnee Fossil Plant.
The public comment period opened today on TVA's Draft Environmental Impact Statement assessing closure methods for ash storage facilities at 10 of its power plants. The document considers closure-in-place and closure-by-removal methods.
Coal ashis waste generated from burning coal and contains contaminants like mercury and arsenic. A closed impoundment may still contain coal ash but contains no water.
TVA officials will be available to answer questions and receive comments about the EIS from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Robert Cherry Civic Center in Paducah. TVA will host an open house on the Paradise Fossil Plant at Muhlenberg County High School in Greenville on Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
