Tens of thousands of people are expected to flood to the Hopkinsville area to view the total solar eclipse in the coming weeks. But there are other nearby towns that might serve just as well for both eager visitors and locals.
According to NASA, the eclipse will hit southern Illinois first, at 2 minutes, 39 seconds of totality in Golconda and 2 minutes, 29 seconds in Metropolis.
Duration of totality in Paducah will be 2 minutes, 20 seconds. Eddyville will see 2 minutes, 39 seconds of total darkness.
For Calvert City: 2 minutes, 28 seconds.
Those in Cadiz will see 2 minutes, 33 seconds.
And there will be 2 minutes, 18 seconds in Clarksville, Tennessee.
The eclipse will hit Hopkinsville with the longest duration of totality, at 2 minutes, 40 seconds.
Totality is when the moon covers the sun creating a corona, ring effect around the sun.
