Be on the lookout for a rose-tinted moon tonight as the first full day of summer will be marked by a so-called ‘Strawberry Moon.’

The National Weather Service in Paducah says sky watchers will be treated to a rare phenomenon as a full moon coinciding with the solstice will give off a reddish, amber hue.

The aptly named ‘strawberry moon’ will be the first since 1948 to be seen from our region.

According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the name doesn’t come from the color, but rather it signifying the peak of strawberry harvesting season.

Today is the longest period of daylight of the year, and the days will progressively get shorter until the winter solstice, December 21st.

In the United States, summer officially begins at 5:34 P.M central standard time.
