TN Republicans against TV Tax

By Chris Taylor

Nashville, TN – Tennessee Republican leaders say they're opposing Governor Phil Bredesen's proposal to tax cable TV as a measure to save government jobs and fund higher education. The tax is part of Bredesen's revenue plan he says would generate about $50 million a year, going to higher education and preserving 200 prosecutor, public defender, probation officer and forester jobs. The Clarksville Leaf Chronicle reports Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey says increasing a tax on cable TV is not the way to balance the budget. Ramsey and other Republican legislators suggest reduced spending and job creation to allay Tennessee's budgetary woes.
