This fall Tennessee students will vote for president of the United States. The Secretary of State’s office said Thursday they will hold the first statewide Student Mock Election.

The effort involves students in preschool through high school from public and private institutions and homeschool groups.

Students will get paper ballots to choose between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump with the option to include additional candidates.

Secretary of State Tre Hargett says he hopes students participating in the mock election will continue to vote as adults. The program also includes civics and citizenship lesson plans created by teachers.

Early voting begins October 17. Mock Election Day is November 1. The results will be revealed November 2.

Matt Markgraf joined the WKMS team as a student in January 2007. He's served in a variety of roles over the years: as News Director March 2016-September 2019 and previously as the New Media & Promotions Coordinator beginning in 2011. Prior to that, he was a graduate and undergraduate assistant. He is currently the host of the international music show Imported on Sunday nights at 10 p.m.
