Ten dilapidated homes in Union County are being rebuilt for their homeowners through a Kentucky Community Development Block Grant.
Dustin Duncan with the Green River Area Development District says the project funding totals around $450,000 from Housing and Urban Development. He says it’s taken about three years to secure the grant.
“Usually they award these kind of grants to larger urban areas,” duncan said. “I think back in the past when they had more money they would spread it out to rural counties as well. But we were able to convince them finally to pass some money along to Union County.”
He said the owners of the homes will each get a new, safer 1,000 square foot house built on the same location.
“They’re usually low-income to qualify for this program,” he said. “A lot of them are elderly and disabled and that’s the reason they can’t take care of their house now.”
Duncan said development officials are seeking additional money from the county and the Kentucky Housing Corporation. He estimates construction will begin in August or September.
