Tea Party Movement Hasn't Expanded Voter Rolls

By AP

Frankfort, KY – The tea party movement has stirred political activism across Kentucky, but hasn't triggered an increase in voters. In fact, Kentucky had a net decline of some 70,000 voters since the presidential election, from 2.9 million to about 2.83 million.

Tea party activists in Kentucky say the decline doesn't hamper the political movement because it has been built around people who are already registered to vote. They say most are Republicans.

Records from the Kentucky State Board of Elections show that, since January 2009, more than 100,000 new voters have registered - 50,000 as Democrats, 41,000 as Republicans and 11,600 with other parties.
