Marshall County citizens who, once again, want to put alcohol sales to a vote are collecting a steady stream of petition signatures.

The Kentucky Lake Convention and Visitor’s Bureau is leading the effort to go wet. Executive Director Randy Newcomb said after a week of petitioning volunteers have collected upwards of 500 signatures. The alcohol option needs 3,366 signatures to go to a vote. Newcomb is optimistic and taking a different approach than a failed 2012 attempt.

“We’re not doing signs anymore, like we did last year, we’re not doing a lot of advertising. We’re just taking people in the community that want to see this happen and we’re getting the petitions signed,” Newcomb said.

Newcomb said allowing the sale of packaged liquor will expand business and make the county’s tourist industry more competitive. He hopes to collect the required signatures by May 15 for a vote in July.

Keith Travis, vice chair for the 2012 opposing group, said a group is forming to advocate against the sale of alcohol.

Volunteers will submit more petitions at an informal meeting tomorrow night at the Benton Courthouse.
