County Health Rankings / CountyHealthRankings.org

A new study finds several counties in our region among the healthiest in Kentucky, but the commonwealth compares poorly to national averages.

The 2015 County Health Rankings from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is made up of two components, health outcomes and health factors. Health outcomes examines two parts, life expectancy and quality of life.

The health factors portion examines a county's tangible traits including healthcare availability, social/economic factors and physical environment.

Calloway (7th), Marshall (26th), Lyon (17th) and Graves (31st) counties placed among the top third statewide in terms of quality of life and life expectancy.

Most other counties in our listening area cracked the top half, out of Kentucky's 120 total counties. Other regional rankings include:

  • McCracken (42nd)
  • Trigg (44th)
  • Christian (52nd)
  • Webster (53rd)
  • Hopkins (54th)
  • Hickman (55th)
  • Caldwell (63rd)
  • Crittenden (64th)
  • Union (67th)
  • Livingston (70th)
  • Carlisle (77th)
  • Ballard (83rd)
  • Fulton (101st)

Overall, Kentucky ranked lower than the national averages in general health, smoking population and obesity.
