State's New Automated Collection System On Line

Officials with the Kentucky Department of Revenue hope a new automated collection system will help the state efficiently collect delinquent taxes. The new $20 million system went on-line this fall.

With the new system, Office of Processing and Enforcement Executive Director Mack Gillim says taxpayers can set up payment plans online.

"One of the things that this system will allow us to do would be to allow taxpayers to suggest a payment arrangement or obtain a payment arrangement through the system itself, given certain parameters which we have set.  So, in other words, the taxpayer could literally call in and get their payment agreements arranged automatically," said Gillim.

Gillim says there about 200,000 cases in the revenue collection system. He says some are a few days old but some cases go back several years.

"I think any time we can collect a dollar which is already due more efficiently and more effectively then obviously that does bolster the general fund and other funds that we collect for," explained Gillim.

Gillim says the new automation also helps to free up staff to work more directly with taxpayers. ?
