Kentucky is re-dedicating the Capitol Education Center in Frankfort to honor Gold Star Families.
Gold Star Families are families whose sons or daughters were active duty military when they lost their lives fighting a U.S. enemy.
Gov. Matt Bevin spoke at the dedication ceremony today (Mon) with Gold Star Mother Lynn Romans.
“How appropriate in this week of Thanksgiving that we recognize those who have laid down their lives so that we may live in the land of the free and the home of the brave,” said Gov. Bevin. “More than 60,000 young people will walk through this hallway every year and will learn that freedom is not free—perhaps they will be inspired to be part of the next generation that will provide that degree of sacrifice.”
The Finance Cabinet worked with the Department of Military Affairs and Gold Star Mothers to design a photo collage, survivor's quilt and other display items.
The Education Center was established by Former First Lady Jane Beshear.
Earlier this year, Bevin said he did not order the removal of signage commemorating former First Lady Jane Beshear’s contributions to the Education Center. At the time, Bevin said he had “no idea” why the sign was removed, but that the center was “not even on my radar screen.”
