Some Murray Electric customers are not getting their bills through the mail, and the utility hasn’t been getting payments either.
General Manager Tony Thompson says the issue began at the end of March. He says the utility is investigating the matter, especially since it didn’t receive payment from several of its large commercial customers.
“The situation that occurred at the end of March where we would normally maybe be behind $100,000 we were lacking $300,000 in payment,” he said.
Thompson points to the recent consolidation of the Paducah U.S. Postal Service processing facility.
“It’s my understanding that the post office has changed some of their processing,” he said. “Places that maybe used to go to Paducah now is going to other places to other places for processing. I’m assuming that maybe part of the problem is due to that change in their process.”
Mail for our region is now sent to Evansville, Indiana, for processing.
USPS Spokesman David Walton says the consolidation shouldn’t be an issue, especially since Murray Electric’s bills are sent through a third party located in South Carolina. But Walton says the USPS is aware of the issue and is doing an internal investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, Murray Electric customers can call the utility if they do not get their bill within the usual timeframe. Thompson says customers can also call to pay their bills over the phone.
