The New Technology Center jointly owned by the Calloway County and Murray Independent School districts is slated to open for the fall semester.
The districts are sharing cost of the new $8 million vocational education building on Johnny Robertson Road, about a mile from both high schools.
Murray Schools Superintendent Bob Rogers says they’re aiming for a September 1st opening date, but weather delays have slowed some work.
“Some of the things will be moved out there in the process of building, some of the equipment," said Rogers. "But it’s possible that there’ll be some classwork done at the old school. Hopefully, everything be moved by the time school starts.”
The state Department of Education runs the school, and plans to increase the number of programs offered from six to eight.
“The center is run by the Workforce Development and Department of Education," said Rogers. "We own the building but they run the programs. So the principal has requested the addition of an industrial maintenance program and the addition of a second pre-nursing program.”
Rogers says work on the new $18 million dollar Murray High School will begin after the new tech center is complete, as the current career building adjacent to the high school will need to be demolished. That building is expected to open in 2018.
Pinnacle Construction in Benton is handling both projects.
