Sales Season for Fireworks Could Expand Under Bill Moving Forward

Matt Markgraf, WKMS

The Kentucky House today will likely vote on a bill to expand the retail sales period for fireworks across the state. The measure, sponsored by Forest Hills Representative Chris Harris, is up for a vote on the consent calendar. That means it will be included among a group of bills when voted on.

Harris says the request came from local fireworks retailers in his district. “So, you’ll have 30 days around the fourth of July, 30 days around New Year’s holiday for seasonal retailers, what’s defined under the statute as seasonal retailers to sell fireworks.”

Harris says, if enacted, the period to sell seasonal fireworks would increase by 21 days in December and three in July. Harris says a request for a longer sales period came from local retailers in his area. He doesn’t anticipate an expanded sales window to make for too much fireworks activity.

“I don’t think people really shoot fireworks off much at Christmas. I think it’s mostly on the New Year’s holiday. But, this will allow them some additional time to set up so they don’t have to cram their purchases into a short period of time. They can buy them at any time during that 30 days," he says.

The bill was adopted unanimously by members of the House Veterans, Military Affairs, and Public Safety Committee. It will appear on the House’s consent calendar, meaning it will be grouped in with a number of other bills.
