River Discovery Center Partners With Environmental Organization to Offer Tree Saplings This Spring

River Discovery Center

Paducah’s River Discovery Center is partnering with an environmental organization to offer free oak saplings to the community this spring.

The center is participating in the Living Lands and Waters Million Trees Project, which aims to protect, preserve, and restore river and watershed environments. Since beginning in 2007, the program has distributed nearly 900,000 trees.

Bur and Swamp White Oak saplings will be available in April. Bur Oaks are one of the slowest growing oaks. They can grow to be 100 feet high with trunk diameters up to 10 feet. Swamp White Oaks can reach heights of 65 to 80 feet and live up to 350 years.

It is recommended that the trees be planted 20 to 30 feet apart and 30 feet from buildings and power lines.
