Retired Army Vet to Travel Mississippi River by Canoe

Matt Markgraf, WKMS

An Army veteran from Clarksville plans to travel the length of the Mississippi River by canoe for personal growth and to raise funds for fellow veterans.

Bennie Giles will set a canoe into Minnesota's Lake Itasca this weekend (between June 3 and 6) for his adventure.

Giles says he will use the trip to raise money and awareness for Homes for Our Troops, a charity that builds homes for wounded veterans.

In an interview with The Leaf-Chronicle, Giles says since he’s been out of the military, he lost the sense of brotherhood he found inside the Army. He expects his journey will be similar to boot camp, breaking him down so he can build back up and come out a better person.

He hopes to raise $5,000 for Homes for Our Troops.
