As we head into the final stretch of the 2014 election season, representatives from the state's two major political parties are making their predictions for Kentucky's most watched November race. Appearing on KET's Kentucky Tonight program Monday, both sides agreed that female voters could play a significant role in the U.S. Senate race.
John McCarthy, former chair of the Kentucky Republican party believes Senator Mitch McConnell represents the interests of women.
"His record speaks for itself as it relates to what women are interested in, which is fiscal responsibility, education, health care issues, because they are the ones that make those decisions in the home," McCarthy said.
Jennifer Moore, former chair of the Kentucky Democratic Party, argues McConnell's opposition to equal pay for equal work legislation and raising the minimum wage is detrimental to women. Moore, who founded Emerge Kentucky to support female candidacies, believes Alison Lundergan Grimes needs to reach out further to women voters. She says female voters can be difference makers.
"What I think this comes down to are women, women candidates and women voters,” said Moore. “In the U.S. Senate race in particular, Alison has to reach out even more to women voters. Women make up 53 percent of the electorate in Kentucky."
In less than two weeks, Grimes and McConnell are scheduled to appear together on Kentucky Tonight.
