Report: Kentucky Grocery Prices Continue to Fall

A recent Kentucky Farm Bureau report shows grocery prices in the commonwealth have fallen for the fourth quarter in a row.

At the end of last year, a cart of 40 basic items - like milk, eggs and produce – cost $121.64 on average. That’s down 1.8 percent from the spring.

Last quarter's total comes out about $10, or 7.5 percent, cheaper than the same period in 2014. That year, prices gradually rose.

The Marketbasket Survey found the most significant price drops in pork and dairy, while grain and poultry costs climbed.

In the report, KFB Commodity Division Director Joe Cain says cheaper groceries could partly be tied to lower commodity prices.

“Just as we have seen the decline in oil prices bring prices down at the gas pump, at some point lower commodity prices should show up in the grocery store,” Cain said. “That’s good news for consumers but unfortunately that means our farmers are seeing lower revenues.”
