Replica Pioneer Village to Neighbor Fort Massac

A non-profit group is moving ahead with plans to construct a replica 19th century pioneer village on recently acquired land near Fort Massac State Park.

The Friends of Fort Massac received more than half a million dollars in state grants to purchase 8 acres of land and demolish an existing factory. Group President Mike Korte says Friends of Fort Massac needs to raise additional funds to build the village, which he hopes will have reenactments and include several buildings.

Fort Massac was originally constructed under a different name for the French and Indian War and the site served as a training ground during the Civil War.

Korte says once the village is complete, the group would like to turn it over to become part of Fort Massac State Park. He expects several more years of work before the village is complete.
