Regarding the NPR/Juan Williams Matter

By WKMS

Murray, KY –
As NPR continues to defend its dismissal of its senior news analyst Juan Williams by citing its ethics policy, we want you to see the policy as it stands, and we are providing the CPB guidelines below as well. WKMS receives grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the organization that the U.S. Congress funds for the support of public television and public radio. WKMS uses these grants to purchase programs from many national programming producers - including NPR, PRI, APM and others - and to pay for a professional journalist staff position in WKMS News. WKMS' grants from CPB vary each year but have amounted to about 14 percent of the station's funding in recent years. We believe these grants are essential to preserve the rich programming you enjoy, so calls for "defunding NPR"* are chilling. NPR management does not consult stations about its decisions, but we are sending your comments along to NPR so that they hear directly from you. We are also communicating worries about this matter through the NPR Board of Directors which includes member station (WKMS is a member station) managers. Thanks for sharing your concerns and for supporting WKMS.

*"Defunding NPR" isn't the correct wording since the Corporation for Public Broadcasting is what is funded, but the intent is clear nonetheless.
