A Preview of Murray's Community Thanksgiving Dinner

As it dawns on you that Thanksgiving's next week, learn more about the Murray Community Dinner on Thanksgiving Day from Reverend Rose Bogal Albritten, who speaks with Kate Lochte on Sounds Good about the event, how to volunteer and donation items needed.

Last year, the event fed more than 300 people. Reverend Rose Bogal Albritten says the specific number is hard to track because the banquet center seats around 150, but many of the meals were delivered to families (many in the Meals on Wheels program). The event costs around $700-800 mainly because they try to make it feel like a dinner one might have at home with real china and utensils to flowers on each table. Afterward, meals are taken to police, fire and EMTs.

For those interested in volunteering, Rev. Bogal-Albritten says to arrive at the center and a job will be given to you: from serving food to picking up people who need a ride to the center to cleaning up. Volunteers are invited to eat, too.

Schedule:

  • 11 a.m. - A non-denominational worship service
  • 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. - The community Thanksgiving dinner

The Menu: Smoked turkey and gravy, dressing, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, rolls, cranberry salad, fresh fruit salad and dessert.

Items Needed: Fresh fruits and desserts (preferably pies)

Reverend Rose Bogal-Albritten can be reached at 270-293-9490. Checks can be sent to St. John's Episcopal Church. Make them out to the Deacon's Discretionary Fund. The church's address is 620 W. Main Street, Murray, KY 42071.
