Update: On Tuesday afternoon, Calloway County Sheriff's Department confirmed the smokey air in Murray is from the controlled burns.

The U.S. Forest Service plans to hold a pair of prescribed burns at Land Between the Lakes starting Tuesday.

Sections of the Buffalo Trail and Franklin Creek areas will be affected.

According to LBL, specific goals include increasing habitat diversity while removing unwanted species that threaten desired plants and trees.

Smoke could drift into surrounding communities and last two to three days.

The Forest Service originally planned to burn in December, but inclement weather brought on a series of delays.
