Police Warn of IRS Telephone Scam

Police say a new tax scam has hit the region this week. Both the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office and Murray Police Department have heard reports of unsolicited callers posing as IRS employees.

These callers have told victims that they owe taxes and have even threatened arrest. The IRS sends bills by mail and does not demand immediate payment over the phone. Officials say if contacted by a scammer, the best thing to do is hang up and report the incident.
