Lexington police have made an arrest in the Friday morning shooting death of a University of Kentucky student. The fatal shooting appears to be robbery related.

Jonathan Krueger, 22, of Perrysburg, Ohio died early Friday morning after being shot along Maxwell Street near Transylvania Park. Police have arrested 18 year old Justin Smith of Lexington and charged him with murder, robbery, tampering with physical evidence, and fleeing and evading. Police do not believe the two men knew each other.

David Lyons with the Bureau of Investigations says Smith was apprehended relatively quickly. "We were probably in a zone of about seven hours or something like that from the time of the occurrence to the arrest which is good, and again that emphasizes, kind of leads back to the fact that the community should feel relieved at that point that we have the person that did this in custody," said Lyons.

Lyons says police continue to investigate others who may have been involved in the crime. Lexington Police Chief Mark Barnard talked to Krueger's father Friday morning. He says the family has been updated on the investigation and thoughts and prayers are with them.

Lyons says the two did not appear to know each other, which is often not the case. "And we're still following up on some leads right now on the possibility of some people that were near or may have been involved which none of that has been solidified," Lyons said. "So, we're following those leads up right now."

Krueger was walking with another person along East Maxwell when he was fatally shot during a robbery. An 8 pm candlelight vigil is scheduled for Friday at the Newman Center in memory of Krueger.
