A group charged with determining university funding based on performances is meeting Tuesday in Frankfort. This is the first of three meetings of the newly-formed Performance Funding Work Group.

Those serving on the workgroup are trying to develop a formula to determine how much money public schools should receive from the state.

Council of Postsecondary Education President Bob King says the panel will look at factors such as the number and types of degrees earned at state funded universities. “What we are shooting for is a model people can understand and have confidence in, and hopefully a model that incentivizes continued improved performance by each of our campuses,” said King.

Degrees such as mathematics and engineering, King says, will be specifically examined because of current demands in today’s economy. The performance group has been asked by legislative members to offer a report by December 1st.
