PCM Begins Construction on New Homeless Shelter

Paducah Cooperative Ministry has begun construction on their new homeless shelter on North 12th Street in Paducah.

The new shelter will have six housing units and an administrative building.

PCM executive director Heidi Suhrheinrich says an endowment will provide partial funding for the $2.3 million project

“We have been blessed with a bequest," Suhrheinrich said. "At that time, we didn’t know what we might be needing that for. It was just shortly after we received that news that we got word of the shelter situation. That will be about $600,000 of the project.”

For 24 years, PCM leased housing from the Paducah Housing Authority to offer shelters for women and single mothers. Last year, Department of Housing and Urban Development regulation changes ended that agreement, which prompted the McCracken County Fiscal Court to consider a $50,000 grant for a new shelter.

Suhrheinrich says the new shelter - Fresh Start Village - will house 40-50 women and children. There are only seven beds in PCM's current, temporary location.
