Kentucky Counties will receive awaited payments in lieu of taxes from the federal government, thanks to the “Cromnibus” spending package Congress approved over the weekend.

The federal government pays in lieu of tax funds to the counties instead of paying local property taxes for the land.

For fiscal year 2015 the program is allotted $442 million. In fiscal year 2014, it totaled $437 million for some 1,900 counties.

Trigg and McCreary counties received the most funds in Kentucky in 2014.

Whitney grew up listening to Car Talk to and from her family’s beach vacation each year, but it wasn’t until a friend introduced her to This American Life that radio really grabbed her attention. She is a recent graduate from Union University in Jackson, Tenn., where she studied journalism. When she’s not at WKMS, you can find her working on her backyard compost pile and garden, getting lost on her bicycle or crocheting one massive blanket.
